How to Start Decorating for Fall: Creating a Cozy Home One Layer at a Time

There is something magical about the first hints of autumn. The mornings feel a little crisper, the evenings arrive a little earlier, and before long you'll find yourself reaching for a cozy blanket and your favorite pumpkin-spiced drink. While it may be tempting to pull out every pumpkin you own at once, I've found that the best fall homes are created slowly, layering pieces over time rather than decorating everything in a single afternoon.

If you're wondering where to begin, here are a few of my favorite ways to welcome the season into your home.

Start with Cozy Textures

The easiest way to transition your home from summer to autumn is by swapping lightweight fabrics for warm, inviting textures. Fold a chunky knit blanket over your favorite chair, add velvet or wool throw pillows, and bring out woven baskets for extra warmth and character.

These simple changes instantly make your home feel comfortable without screaming "fall."

Build Your Color Palette

Instead of bright summer colors, begin introducing richer earth tones throughout your home. Warm browns, caramel, olive greens, rust, mustard, and creamy neutrals create a timeless autumn palette that feels elegant and welcoming.

Even changing a few pillow covers, table linens, or artwork can completely change the mood of a room.

Bring Nature Indoors

One of my favorite ways to decorate for the season is by using natural elements. Gather dried leaves, feathers, acorns, pinecones, branches, dried gourds, wheat stems, and pumpkins to create simple displays throughout your home.

These organic touches add texture and beauty while celebrating everything we love about autumn.

Create Cozy Moments

Fall isn't just about decorating, it's about creating spaces you'll actually enjoy.

Set a cozy breakfast table with warm mugs and linen napkins. Style your coffee station with seasonal syrups and a favorite candle. Add a stack of books beside your favorite chair with a soft blanket nearby.

These little moments are what make a house feel like home.

Remember...Decorating Takes Time

One of the questions I'm asked most often is how our home came together.

The answer is simple: it didn't happen overnight.

Creating a home you truly love is a journey. It takes years of collecting meaningful pieces, finding vintage treasures, saving for special furniture, and slowly discovering your own style.

Don't feel like you have to recreate someone else's home in a weekend. Enjoy the process. Add pieces that make you smile, tell your story, and create a space where family and friends always feel welcome.

Because at the end of the day, that's what a cozy home is really about.

Happy decorating, friends!
